RIP Albini, who died at 61. He was an a**hole for the right reasons, after he grew up a little:
> “However you define ‘woke,’ anti-woke means being a cunt who wants to indulge bigots,” he wrote recently – but these days he also says things like: “Life is hard on everybody and there’s no excuse for making it harder. I’ve got the easiest job on earth, I’m a straight white dude, fuck me if I can’t make space for everybody else.”

This is my nominee for least-covered, least-understood story of the decade. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is the righteous and plausible path to ending the Electoral College. No constitutional amendment required.
That seems too good to be true. Also, to wrap your head around it requires a bit of effort. It’s almost like (content warning!) math.
But take a minute or two, and the light will dawn. This could happen. And it should.
Tiny Central Coast newsroom Lookout Santa Cruz wins Pulitzer Prize
As legacy publications celebrated their Pulitzer Prize wins Monday,
bottles of champagne were also uncorked at Lookout Santa Cruz,

“What a day!” said Ken Doctor, the Lookout’s chief executive and founder. “It’s incredible!”
The online news organization won the prize for it…
The COSTUMING tho.
Watch closely when you see it for the third or fourth time: Gurney Halleck’s boots are worn at the right angles for someone who always walks quietly. The details are absolutely outstanding and as a person who’s done a not-insubstantial amount of historical costuming creation and sewing, to not give this movie the Oscar next year for costume design would be just unforgivable.
Immediately booked a hotel (with free cancellation option!) for the @… 2024 now that dates and venue are official[1].
This is a lesson I learned in 2022, due to some concerts that happened in town in parallel all the hotel prices were stupendously high when I tried to book two or three month before the conference.

I truly believe that there will come a day in a "successful" person's life that they'll learn that the toes you step on, on the way to the top, are connected to the same asses you'll have to kiss on the way back down.
Some have this foresight, others will learn it the hard way. But it will be learned.

A small network of friendships among freshmen at Dutch College in 1994-1995. Friendship ties were surveyed at 7 different times over the year, and each edge is timestamped. The direction of an edge indicates that person i named person j, and the edge weight represents their level of friendship, ranging from -1 (risk of conflict) to 3 (best friend).
This network has 32 nodes and 3062 edges.

I've worked in corps for decades now and watched them all work hard to make every position fungible, so that any person can do any position. In short they want easily replaceable workers. That way they can use the most desperate in the job market who will work for less.
It's only starting to dawn on me, though, how many of the other problems in corp world stem from that one strategy. So much of the incompetence, administrivia, and bad organization stem from it.

Another day, another person barely caught the train on #Poznań Główny station, because of the useless platform numbers and confusing markings.
The "new" train station features two adjacent doors, leading to the same staircase. Above one of them, the label says "platform 3". Above the other, it says "platform 4". How this can be anything but confusing? The most logical (and incorrect) conclusion is that one track belongs to platform 3, while the other to platform 4.
